Jingle Bells with Mrs. Weiss!

Today our 5th graders got to give a special present to the rest of the school.  Near the end of the school day, our students joyfully played their instruments to the tune of "Jingle Bells"  while marching in two straight lines.  The 5th graders were led by Mrs. Weiss, our music teacher. Awesome Christmas spirit!

Cha Cha Slide Math

This week we utilized the popular dance song "Cha Cha Slide," to remember how to work with powers of 10  when multiplying and dividing decimal numbers.  It served as a great brain break as well!!!

In case you missed it...

This past weekend, most of the 5th grade participated in the  33rd annual Boar's Head Festival at Bethlehem church.  It was very heartwarming to see all the family and community members enjoy the production.  We had a few students who were performing in the Boar's Head for the first time!  The fellowship shared during this time strengthened their bonds within the classroom environment as well.  

In the above picture we had a few moments to spare while waiting to participate in the final scene.  The selfie ( or crowdy?) was a unique and enjoyable moment that was organized in under 30 seconds.  So goes many of our best memories in life!  

Let us continue to celebrate our Lord and Savior during the CHRISTmas season and beyond!

So thankful!

This week our 5th graders had an opportunity to say what they are thankful for.  Some decorated turkeys, others horns of plenty.  In addition to these blessings, I wanted to the class to also be thankful for the men and women who have served in the armed services.  We had an opportunity to write a letter to an organization that will distribute them to a Veteran.  

We must "Give thanks in all circumstances..."1 Thessalonians 5:18, for everyone and thing around us that God has given.  I certainly give thanks for having such an awesome and unique bunch of 5th graders this year, and look forward to my students' academic, spiritual, social and emotional growth during the remainder of the school year!!!

May be peace of the Lord be with you always.  

Flat Martin Luther Adventures!

Although Martin Luther was a great reformer, bringing us closer to God's word, he was merely a man.  We can be inspired to become great as God intends us to be by continuing to learn about our spiritual, cultural, and societal families, in order to make a better place

My 5th grade students were directed to take our Martin Luther on trips outside the classroom.  Associating Martin Luther walking the same path as ourselves, enables us to conceive positive reform
in our own Christian environments.   Here are a few pictures my students submitted.

Greetings students and families!

Today we had the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of some of our students here at Bethlehem.  Each class selected deserving students for the:  Friendship award, Most Improved, and Academic Excellence award.  The Friendship and Most Improved awards got certificates, while the excellence in Academics got a gift card from Kokomo's.   It is our goal as a school to hold a Jubilee Chapel at least once a month, in order to recognize those students that are making a difference within the classroom academically and socially.  The 3 recipients for the month of October are:

Olivia Short/ Best Friend

Olivia has been observed demonstrating positive relationships with others within the classroom.  She very rarely speaks ill will about others in her class, and treats others how she would like to be treated.  I can count on Olivia to set a positive example in the classroom an any given day.  This is an asset to have in a friend, especially when God provides his fair share of challenges.  I look forward to having Olivia's support in our 5th grade classroom!

Jacob Parker/ Most Improved

Jacob has an abundant amount of energy.  Initially, he tested the waters in the classroom through electrically charged conversations concerning his environment.  Through routine and an established positive learning environment, Jacob and I have less bouncing off the wall sessions, and more discussions about what attributes are needed to have a successful day.  I look forward to observing Jacob's continual growth according to God's plan!  

Gina Paveglio/ Academic Excellence

Gina was certainly busy this past summer by reading over 70 books.  This reading determination carried over into the school year.  She has benefited from a revamped AR program, thanks to our 6th grade teacher Mrs. Smith, and continues to look forward to doing well on each book test.  Gina currently has earned 240 AR points.  I am pretty sure if one would total the last 4 years of her AR points, she would not have this many.  On the anniversary of the Reformation, where the good Word was given to more of the general population, I am excited to witness Gina's eagerness in the words of God and men/women.  God's blessings, Gina!
God is certainly unstoppable in the lives of these students!  I look forward to seeing how God continues to be  unstoppable for another group of 5th graders the next Jubilee Chapel!

Valley 40th Celebration...

Last Friday, we had the opportunity to celebrate Valley Lutheran H.S. turning 40 years old in their ministry.  As a way of honoring the institution, members of our  5th grade

class donned their Bethlehem and Valley gear!

May God continue to bless our institutions of education for many years to come!

Religion: 

We will lean how God gave His Word to us.  We will also learn how God has preserved His Word through the years, even as people have misused, neglected, or worked contrary to the Word of God. 

Reading/Writing/ELA:

We have begun reading the book “Wonder.” In the classroom.  Students will complete daily written and oral discussions on important messages within the book.  Our vocabulary will also come from the text.  Students will practice more on Narrative Writing.

Students continue to work on identifying kinds of sentences (simple, compound, and complex) and types of sentences ( declarative, imperative, exclamatory and interrogative) completing grammar exercises.

Math:  We will review problem solving word problems using a 4 step plan, taking a chapter 1 review and test, and find the prime factorization of numbers.

Social Studies:  We will begin learning about the earliest Americans.

Science:  We will continue to review the life processes, discover what cells are, and learn what tissues, organs and systems are.  Students have a cell project due next Monday, September 25.  A handout of project expectations went out today, Monday.

Last week’s church attendance was over 80% for the class!  Keep it up!  If you are looking for a church, Bethlehem’s worship services are Sunday: 9 a.m. (contemporary)  10: a.m. (traditional), and Monday at 7 p.m. (traditional).

Suspension can be a good thing!

Early last week, students were assigned into groups of 3 to 4.  The catch?  Each group had to build a spider web made of plastic bags that was capable of holding the most books possible.  Groups received 2 plastic shopping bags and were NOT allowed tape or glue.  This STEM activity (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) followed on the heels of our Science lessons pertaining to animal adaptations.

First, each group had to begin cutting and assembling the bags according to what design they decided would work best.  A few groups asked and received permission to look up designs on the Internet.

Some groups cut strips that were too small to go into the design, which usually resulted in a request for more shopping bags  in order to start again.  Some groups built webs that looked almost like the original shopping bags.  They were redirected to consider what an actual spider web looked like.  Other groups got into layering their spider web, with each layer consisting of tied or woven strips of plastic bag.  At least one group member had to be encouraged to collaborate with their group members to see what design they thought would be best.  

The best performing spider web held 16 books. 

 Afterwards, students had to record their findings on a follow up worksheet.  

Students were also instructed to research topics related to their project.  Some research topics that were listed for students, but not limited to, were:  What is the strongest, lightest material in the world, what spider webs are the strongest, largest suspension bridges, other inventions that require suspension technology, and materials that make up suspension bridges.  My 5th graders had to look up at least 2 facts with a webpage reference.  A few students were allowed to present their findings.

 

In the end, it was a fun experience!  My 5th graders were able to work in groups, build self esteem, create designs that used common household items, research and apply what they learned to their world, and also got a chance to get out of their seats!  Awesome!
